The UK government has scrapped plans for a network of independently funded news consortia (IFNC) in favour of a nationwide superfast broadband rollout.
Culture secretary Jeremy Hunt said his goal was to provide Britain with the “best superfast broadband network in Europe”, adding that the previous government’s goal to implement speeds of 2Mbps was “pitifully unambitious”.
The new plans, he noted, could go as far as forcing utility companies to open up their ducts since the main financial obstacle to rolling out new fibre optic networks is digging up the roads.
