German incumbent Deutsche Telekom’s US unit T-Mobile USA is looking into potential JVs with cablecos and other network providers, to increase spectrum capacity.
T-Mobile USA CEO Robert Dotson said at a recent company presentation that the unit continues to look at JV opportunities for additional spectrum and that it is currently looking at some different options, especially with cable firms. The subsidiary is the fourth largest mobile player on the US market, struggling to keep up with the top three: Verizon Wirless, AT&T and Sprint Nextel.
Separately, DT CEO Rene Obermann last week reiterated that the telco is committed to its US unit, adding that there are plans to reverse the decline in profitability of the subsidiary by shifting focus to web-enabled handsets. Obermann said that DT will be looking at ways to ensure future growth for T-Mobile USA throughout 2010, and that mobile internet has only just started to take off on the US market.
