Thailand is planning to issue WiMAX licences by September, the National Telecommunications Commission announced.
The NTC is aware of the need to expand mobile broadband coverage in the country and will use 2.3GHz and 2.5GHz spectrum to enable the service.
Broadband penetration currently stands at around 2% in Thailand and wireless internet is seen as the next big growth wave in the sector.
An WiMAX licence auction is now scheduled to take place in August with the winners to be awarded spectrum the following month.
In addition, the NTC is planning to hold an auction of 3.9G technology in September, having failed to distribute 3G licences amid a series of delays stretching back half a decade.
Given this legacy there remain concerns that the process will again be hit by delays, especially as Thailand is working to create a the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission, a new regulator to manage the telecoms sector.
