Burundi Backbone System Company (BBS) has signed a public-private partnership agreement to build and operator a 1,000 km national fibre optic network in Burundi.
The 20-year project, which is reportedly worth US$15-20m, has received US$10.5m grant from the World Bank. The funds provided by the bank will be used to connect small towns with difficult commercial viability.
BBS is a consortium of local telecoms operators Africell, Onatel, U-COM Burundi, Econet Wireless Burundi and CBINET.
BBS has launched an international tender for the supply of infrastructure with bids due by mid-June.
The network is expected to be built in two years.
Law firm Gide Loyrette Nouel advised the government on the project.
