Middle Eastern operator Yahsat has been granted a ten year licence to operate by the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) of the United Arab Emirates.
The licence allows Yahsat to build and operate a public telecoms network and provide traditional satellite services across the UAE.
It is the third operator to gain this kind of concession for telecoms provision in the UAE, following Etisalat and Du.
TRA Director General Mohammed Nasser Al Ghanim said: “licensing Yahsat comes as confirmation of the role of TRA in driving the telecommunications market in the country to compete globally. Through this license Yahsat will provide the region’s first multi-purpose satellite communications system.”
Yahsat has also stated that the launch of its first satellite is subject to a minor delay and will now take place in early 2011 rather than late 2010.
