Telekom Srbija may be put up for sale this year now that its monopoly on fixed-line services has ended, Serbian prime minister Mirko Cvetkovic was quoted saying in local press.
The Minister of Telecommunications and Information Society Jasna Matic was also quoted saying that 2010 would not be a bad year for the privatisation of the telecoms incumbent.
However, earlier this month, a spokesperson of the Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Society denied reports that the government had reached a preliminary agreement to sell 30% plus one share in Telekom Srbija to Deutsche Telekom for E1bn.
Telekom Srbija lost its monopoly on fixed-line services in January when Telenor won the country’s second fixed-line licence.
Serbia owns 80% of Telekom Srbija, while Greece’s OTE, in which Deutsche Telekom is the largest shareholder, owns the rest.
The Serbian authorities were not immediately available for comments.
