Swedish alternative operator Tele2 has named Mats Granryd as its new president and CEO, effective September 1.
This follows the February resignation of Harri Koponen, who had cited “irreconcilable differences over leadership”. In the interim, CFO Lars Nilsson had been filling the CEO role.
At the time of Koponen’s resignation, Tele2 indicated that it would pursue his expansion strategy, which had focused on Russia and Kazakhstan.
Granryd was quoted this morning saying that his appointment would not bring any shifts in this strategy. He noted that focus areas were likely to include mobile broadband and low-cost triple play offers, in Russia as well as Western Europe.
In a statement issued today, the company hailed Granryd’s knowledge of the telecoms industry in Sweden and abroad, adding that his strengths include emerging markets, new technologies and consumer strategies.
He is currently the head of Northern Europe and Central Asia for Ericsson, having previously led the Northwest Europe, India, CDMA and North Africa units and the global customer accounts for Vodafone and Bharti. Before joining Ericsson he was a management consultant in telecom strategies at ARRIGO and Andersen.
The company, founded in 1993, last year had net sales of SEK39.5bn and reported an operating profit (EBITDA) of SEK9.4bn.
