Russian Space Systems (RSS) has signed up US-based Trimble to help market GLONASS devices in the region.
The pair have set up a 50-50 joint venture company, based in Moscow to do this. The new company, called Rusnavgeoset, will sell commercial global navigation satellite system geodetic network infrastructure systems to federal and local government agencies, as well as large companies in Russia and the CIS. Operations will begin following the completion of the joint venture’s registration, which, according to Trimble, is expected to be some time in June 2010.
The GLONASS satellite positioning system has been subject of heavy investment from the Russian government, receiving an huge budget hike of Rbs67bn (US$2.6bn) last year. Three more satellites are scheduled to be launched in August and November, taking the system up to its fully operational requirements of 24.
State-run RSS is the principal organization of the Russian aerospace industry for navigation and geo-spatial technologies, designing, developing, manufacturing and maintaining space information systems in the Russian federation.
Headquartered in Sunnyvale, California, Trimble provides solutions focused on applications requiring position or location in order to help make field and mobile workers in businesses and government more productive.
