The Palestinian Authority plans to issue a third mobile phone licence covering the West Bank in 2013, according to the authority’s telecoms minister.
In an interview with a Palestinian newspaper, Mashour Abu Daqqa said that the authority would launch a bidding process in 2012.
The winner of a third licence would need the Palestinians’ two main political parties, Fatah and Hamas, to reconcile before it could launch mobile phone services in the Gaza Strip.
Hamas refuses to recognise the Fatah-led Palestinian Authority’s decisions. It still blocks Wataniya Palestine, which launched in the West Bank last November from operating in the Gaza Strip.
Paltel, which is owned by local businessman Munib Masri and which received its licence before Fatah and Hamas fell out in 2007, operates in both the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.
