Egypt’s Orascom Telecom has contacted the Algerian authorities to enter discussions to sell mobile operator Djezzy, according to media reports.
The move follows repeated statements from Algerian officials that Algeria would oppose a sale of the mobile operator to South Africa’s MTN.
On April 28 Orascom announced it had held talks to sell all or part of its assets to South Africa’s MTN but on the same day an Algerian minister said that the state would prevent any change of ownership in Djezzy.
Algerian trade minister Hachemi Djaaboub confirmed the government’s opposition of a sale of Djezzy to MTN earlier this week after South African officials visited Algeria to request that the authorities allow the transaction.
Orascom was not immediately available for comments.
