Australia’s opposition party has threatened to cancel the country’s planned Next Generation broadband project.
The multi-billion dollar plan could be scuppered if a coalition government were to come into power.
NBN, the company in charge of the project, is continuing with its preparations for the A$43bn project and claims to be unaffected by the speculation. There has been some scepticism about the size of the plan but Prime Minister Kevin Rudd remains committed to it and his government continues to negotiate with incumbent operator Telstra, which has its own reservations about the project.
Were the coalition government to get into power later this year then they could also prevent the proposed split of Telstra’s wholesale and retail arms.
