India’s government is to hold talks with the country’s mobile operators prior to implementing new charges on second generation spectrum.
The regulator, TRAI, has suggested that operators pay a one-off retrospective fee for 2G spectrum, which would be especially costly for the likes of Bharti Airtel.
India’s leading mobile operator is leading the complaints as it may be forced to pay as much as US$1.4bn for its 2G spectrum.
The timing of the news is particularly insulting for the operators that are currently engaged in India’s 3G auction, which is likely to see some of them spend over US$3bn on new spectrum. That process is expected to end soon and discussions on the 2G back payment will also take place shortly.
