Some members of the Zimbabwean government are opposed to the privatisation of mobile operator NetOne, according to local reports.
Finance minister Tendai Biti was quoted saying that some of the members of the government were uncomfortable selling NetOne as they believed the poor performance of the operator was a management issue. He reportedly added that there was no reason why rival operator Econet Wireless Zimbabwe was making US$65m every month, in comparison.
NetOne is the smallest of Zimbabwe’s mobile operator with 250,000 subscribers, while Econet has three million subscribers and Telecel Zimbabwe over one million.
The Zimbabwean authorities were not immediately available for comments.
