France Telecom announced that its chairman and CEO Didier Lombard had decided to submit to the board of directors on February 24 a proposal to separate the functions of chairman and CEO from March 1.
If accepted, Lombard will stay chairman, retaining the responsibility to define the group’s strategic and technological orientations. Stephane Richard, currently CEO delegate, will take up the role of CEO in which he will be in charge of the group’s operations, and notably the deployment of the new industrial project and the new social contract, which is expected to be presented in the next few weeks.
France Telecom is facing a social crisis in which trade unions have blamed tough management practices under Lombard leadership for the wave of suicides which has hit the group over the last 18 months.
