The COO of NII Holdings has taken on more responsibility after becoming president of Nextel Brazil.
Gokul Hemmady has been overseeing the Brazilian business following the departure of Sergio Chaia last November.
The LatAm-focused operator is in the midst of a strategic shift as it looks to concentrate on its operations in Brazil and Mexico and improve its network in those countries. As part of this plan it recently sold 4,456 towers in Brazil and Mexico to American Tower for US$811m. It also wants to dispose of its businesses in Chile and Argentina. It has already sold Nextel Peru to Chilean telco Entel in a US$411m deal in August.
Hemmady will be responsible for managing the deployment of the 3G network upgrades in Brazil. Before becoming COO, Hemmady was NII’s CFO, his first role at the company after joining in 2007.
