China has issued licences to provide 4G mobile services to the smaller two of the country’s three state-owned mobile network operators, China Telecom and China Unicom, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology announced.
Number one player China Mobile received its 4G licence in late 2013, and by the end of January had 106.8 million 4G subscribers.
China Telecom, the smallest operator, said the 4G licence will enable it to take advantage of the fast-growing demand for data and enhance customers’ experience as well as corporate returns.
The company added that it believes the 4G licence will contribute to the sustainable development of both itself and the Chinese telecoms sector as a whole, intensifying competition and fostering economic growth.
China Mobile claimed to have 806 million mobile subscribers at the end of January, well ahead of China Unicom’s 187 million and China Telecom’s 299 million.
