UK IPTV venture YouView is besieged by multiple problems that could see the project become obsolete by the time it is eventually launched in 2012, reported The Daily Telegraph.
The report claims that YouView, a JV of partners including telcos BT and Talk Talk, which was due to roll out in July this year, has been unable to agree technical standards with industry body Digital TV Group (DTG).
However, a DTG spokeswoman told TelecomFinance that the group has “not failed to agree technical standards” with YouView.
“The DTG’s technical specification for ‘Connected TV’ which will underpin services such as YouView is on schedule and was published to DTG members at the end of last year,” she said.
YouView’s set-top box also faces a raft of technical issues that cause it to keep crashing, The Daily Telegraph report adds, citing an unnamed senior executive of one of the project’s partners.
In related news, UK cableco Virgin Media is looking at ways to appeal against regulator Ofcom’s decision last year to not investigate complaints that YouView breaches the Competition Act, a separate The Daily Telegraph report claims.
A YouView spokeswoman declined to comment on speculation, but said: “We are keeping all timings under review and our priority is to ensure we get the product right. Development of YouView is progressing well and our shareholders are fully supportive of our strategy for delivery.”
