UK broadband and cable operator Virgin Media has reiterated its call for an independent examination of IPTV platform YouView, formerly Project Canvas, reported the Daily Mail.
Citing a Virgin Media spokesman, the report states the group believes YouView, which counts UK telcos BT and TalkTalk among its many partners, is anti-competitive and will restrict consumer choice while stifling innovation.
The YouView brand name was unveiled on September 16 along with its first CEO, former head of UK broadcaster BBC’s corporate strategy team Richard Halton.
The service plans to launch in the first half of next year, but has been subject to multiple calls to UK regulator Ofcom for a competition inquiry.
Along with Virgin Media, other groups that have placed official complaints include IPVision, the DTT/IPTV over-the-top provider, and Open Source Consortium, the open standards software trade body.
Ofcom is expected to decide whether to launch such an inquiry by November this year.
