Reports have once again resurfaced stipulating that state-owned Viettel is considering buying a 60% stake in Bangladeshi operator Teletalk for around US$300m .
Bangladeshi Telecommunications Minister Rajiuddin Ahmed Raju is even cited in local press as saying that Viettel has submitted a proposal to invest in Teletalk.
However, Asian banking sources have continually rubbished the reports. “It’s very hard to believe that Viettel is looking at outbound acquisitions. The company barely knows what it’s doing in its home market, and I have no idea how they would be able to bring anything to the Bangladeshi market,” said one source.
