The Haitian government has reportedly received its first bid for the sale of a 70% stake in government owned telco Telecommunications d’Haiti (Teleco).
Vietnamese operator Viettel Corporation is believed to have submitted a bid of US$59m for the majority stake and remains the sole bidder after local bids from two operators and the Bank of Haiti were rejected.
Viettel’s bid includes a pledge to install a fibre optic network across the island, which will provide broadband internet to remoter locations. The Vietnamese operator has recently expanded into Cambodia and Laos.
The stake sale is slated to be completed by the end of April 2010.
