USTelecom has named Robert Hunt, vice president for regulatory affairs and business operations at independent Texas-based telco GVTC, as its new board chairman.
Hunt replaces CenturyLink executive vice president Steve Davis who has retired, the US trade association announced.
Hunt has previously held several industry leadership roles focusing on public policy advocacy and is a board member and former chairman of Texas Telephone Association. He was a founding board member of the Texas Lone Star Network, an association of local communications companies providing wholesale telecoms services nationwide.
USTelecom president Walter McCormick commented: “Robert’s extensive background in business and regulatory policy and his knowledge of business operations will provide the board with valuable insights as the industry confronts complex policy issues over the next two years.”
Meanwhile, John Jones, senior vice president of public policy and government relations at CenturyLink, will take over from Davis as his company’s representative on the board.
In March, USTelecom filed a petition with an appeals court calling for a review of the FCC’s net neutrality ruling. McCormick has criticised the regulator’s decision to reclassify ISPs as common carriers under Title II of the Telecommunications Act, arguing that it is the wrong approach to ensuring broadband is deployed throughout the US.
Advocating an “open and transparent” internet on its website, USTelecom argues that the “robust investment and rapid innovation that characterises the internet today exists precisely because Democratic and Republican FCC chairmen have recognised the importance of keeping 19th century regulation away from 21st century technology”.
