A strong influx of new orders in 2009 meant that Thales Alenia Space had cause for cheer on the publication of its full-year results, despite recording a 3% decline in revenue.
Total sales were E1.433bn. However, the order intake rose by 17% to E1.593bn as a result of Thales capturing lucrative contracts including Eutelsat’s W3B, The European Space Agency’s Sentinel 3 and the Globalstar constellation.
The space division’s backlog now stands at E2.14bn, an 8% rise on its position at the end of 2008.
EBIT was E79m, an organic increase of E7m. The unit lost E10.1m after insurance claims through damage caused by an earthquake at its facility in Aquila, Italy.
