Telkom Kenya will receive a shareholder loan from the government to buy a US$10m 3G licence, Reuters reports quoting a senior Treasury official.
The telecoms incumbent is controlled by France Telecom, which bought a 51% stake in 2007 for KES26bn (E259.5m), while the state owns the rest.
The French operator reportedly demanded repayment for much of this, arguing that some of the assets it paid for did not appear on the company asset register.
Safaricom, which is owned by Vodafone, is currently the only 3G licence holder in the market and dominates the mobile sector with a reported 78% share of the market.
