Telkom Kenya, a subsidiary of French incumbent Orange, has named Vincent Lobry as its new CEO, effective from today.
Lobry replaces Mickael Ghossein, who has been appointed as senior VP of Orange Business Services – Middle East, according to a company statement.
The incoming CEO, who has 35 years’ experience in the telecoms sector, most recently served as senior executive VP of Orange Polska, in charge of strategy, marketing, convergence and value creation.
Earlier this year, Orange launched a strategic review of its Kenyan and Ugandan units, which are among the smallest operators in their respective markets.
While Orange Uganda was sold to Africell for about US$10m a few months back, Telkom Kenya is reportedly attracting interest from a few potential bidders.
With only a 7% market share as opposed to 66% for leading player Safaricom, Telkom Kenya has been faced with financial difficulties.
However, Orange said today in its statement that Telkom posted an 8% revenue growth for the overall business for the first half of the year, compared to the same period last year, while its EBITDA went up by 7.7 points.
“This was as a result of the major investments made under Mickael’s watch, enabling the company better compete in the market as well as offer quality service and customer experience leading to better retention,” the company commented.
