Indonesia’s Telkom has agreed to buy GTA from Japan’s Advantage Partners for an undisclosed sum.
Assuming local and US regulators give the go-ahead, Telkom’s US subsidiary will buy TeleGuam Holdings, the parent company of GTA.
Announcing the deal, GTA CEO and president Robert Haulbrook said: “After ten years of private-equity ownership, I believe this is a good time to transition the company to a successful international telecommunications firm such as Telkom.”
Telkom for its part said it had been attracted by Guam’s strategic location, at the heart of undersea cable networks connecting Asia and the US.
The company also has a presence in Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, Taiwan, Malaysia, Macau, East Timor and Myanmar.
Advantage Partners acquired the company for around Y10bn (US$120m) in 2011 from GE and Disney family fund Shamrock Capital Advisors. The US pair had themselves bought GTA from the Guam government back in 2005.
At that time, Enda Hardiman, managing partner at Hardiman Telecommunications, described Guam’s attractiveness as lying in both US military presence and its connectivity to Hong Kong, South East Asia and the US West Coast, meaning it was well positioned for the siting of data centres.
