Telekom Austria CEO Hannes Ametsreiter would consider possibilities to create synergies with KPN in the future, following the entry of Carlos Slim’s America Movil (AMX) as key investor in both companies.
Asked by TelecomFinance if there could be some sort of co-operation between KPN and Telekom Austria in the future, Ametsreiter replied:
“I think the first question will be what kind of synergies are possible between Telekom Austria and America Movil. And only at a later stage, if it turns out that additional, even better, synergies are indeed an option, then it would be worth considering taking further steps to realise those.
“It would be a mistake not to consider any kind of possible synergies, given the strong competition in the telecoms industry.”
The remarks were made in Ametsreiter’s first extensive media interview since AMX agreed to acquire Ronny Pecik’s 21% stake in Telekom Austria in mid June.
Following a recent tender offer, AMX also has a 27.7% stake in KPN.
The TA CEO described the arrival of AMX as the second largest shareholder in Telekom Austria as “very positive indeed,” and predicted that a seat on the board of Telekom Austria for the Mexican player will be discussed at one point.
The full Q&A with Telekom Austria CEO Hannes Ametsreiter, in which he also discusses the takeover of no-frills brand Yesss!, his take on the privatisation of PTK in Kosovo and other acquisition opportunities, will be published in the next edition of TelecomFinance magazine, due later this week.
