Indian conglomerate Reliance Industries, which controls broadband services provider Infotel Broadband, is looking to take part in the upcoming 2G auction, according to the Economic Times citing executives close to the matter.
The company could reportedly try to bid aggressively for pan-Indian 2G spectrum. As a result, analysts believe that this could lead to a significant increase in spectrum prices and therefore impact other players.
In 2010, Infotel was the only company to have secured a pan-Indian BWA licence. It has yet to launch 4G services but is reportedly currently in talks with towercos such as BSNL and Reliance Communications to do so by the end of the year.
The upcoming 2G auction is aimed at allowing mobile operators, which will have their licences cancelled as a result of the 2G scam, to bid for spectrum again. But some carriers have expressed concerns about the proposed reserve prices, saying those are too high.
