Telecom Argentina, the country’s largest telecommunications operator has started to operate in Uruguay through a MVNO agreement with Uruguay’s state-owned telco Antel, the Argentine daily Infobae has reported.
TA which is controlled through a JV in Sofora – a holding company controlled by Telecom Italia and Grupo Werthein – will offer mobile telephone access in Uruguay through its ‘Personal’ unit.
Telecom Italia applied to gain a controlling stake in Sofora yesterday and its chief executive, Franco Bernabe has said that Latin America is central to the company’s future growth plans.
Personal also operates in Paraguay, through the company’s Nucleo unit and has 17.7 million subscribers in Argentina and Paraguay.
