The Tanzanian authorities are in talks to buy the 35% stake in PTO Tanzania Telecommunications Company (TTCL) it does not already own from Zain, according to a newspaper report.
Zain, which is close to selling its African assets to Bharti Airtel, has been rumoured for several months to be seeking an exit from the Tanzanian operator.
Last December TelecomFinance reported that Tanzanian deputies called on the government to bail out the telecoms incumbent, which needed some US$150m of fresh funds, representing nearly twice of its US$80m debt level. TTCL was rumoured to be in talks with a Chinese bank about a potential loan but the bank wanted a government guarantee.
