Tele2 Russia has named Sergey Emdin as its new CEO. He will be tasked with establishing the company as a fully integrated operator and achieving rapid data growth.
Emdin joins the mobile operator from Northern Capital Gateway, which operates the Pulkovo Airport in St Petersburg. He replaces Mikhail Noskov, who held the top job for less than two years.
Noskov will take on business projects outside the VTB Group, Tele2 Russia’s parent company, the operator said in a statement.
Emdin served as CEO and general director of Northern Capital Gateway from April 2010 until February this year. He previously held general director roles with power companies EuroSibEnergo and Irkutskenergo. He holds qualifications from St Petersburg State University, the University of Kansas, Harvard Business School and Irkutsk State Technical University.
Tele2 Russia chairman Yuri Soloviev said Emdin will help the company to boost subscriber numbers and expand its network infrastructure.
In 2014, Tele2 Russia formed a mobile joint venture with state-controlled Rostelecom, T2 RTK Holding. The VTB group and a consortium of strategic investors own 55% of the JV, while Rostelecom owns the remaining 45%.
Tele2 Russia’s former parent, Sweden’s Tele2 group, exited the company in 2014, although it still uses the brand name.
Tele2 Russia claims to serve 65 million customers across 60 regions nationwide. It first launched in Moscow in October 2015, providing 3G and 4G mobile services. The company’s larger rivals are MTS, MegaFon and VimpelCom.
