Jamaica may sell a third mobile licence, Phillip Paulwell, minister of science, technology, energy and mining has been quoted saying.
The official said that following approval by the Office of Utilities Regulation and the Spectrum Management Authority, the motion was now before the Cabinet, according to remarks at an energy industry event cited by the Jamaica Observer.
The new player would compete with market leader Digicel and number two player Flow.
Digicel acquired Claro Jamaica from América Móvil in 2011 as part of an asset swap, which was later challenged.
Cable & Wireless Communications (CWC)-owned Lime acquired cableco Columbus’ local business Flow as part of a US$1.85bn merger completed last March. Since then, Liberty Global has agreed to buy CWC for £3.6bn (US$5.48bn).
Jamaica has a population of some 2.7 million, and mobile penetration of 109%.
