Erik Aas is reportedly set to replace Ziad Shatar as CEO of VimpelCom’s (NASDAQ:VIP) Bangladeshi unit Banglalink on Sunday.
Shatar sent a letter to Bangladesh’s telecoms minister yesterday saying he would leave the country on Monday, The Daily Star reported. He may take on a CEO role in Jordan, the report stated.
Shatar joined Banglalink, the country’s second largest MNO behind Telenor-controlled GrameenPhone, as CEO in January 2013, having previously worked as CTO at Wind Telecommunications, another VimpelCom unit.
Aas, according to his LinkedIn profile, founded Norway-based private investment firm Lakeview Invest in April 2014.
He previously spent 10 years in Asia, most recently as CEO of PT Axis Telekom Indonesia, completing its sale and handover to PT XL Axiata in March 2014. Before that, he spent three years as CEO of Bangladesh’s GrameenPhone.
Banglalink was not immediately available for comment.
VimpelCom has a 51% stake in Global Telecom Holding (GTH) which, in turn, owns Banglalink, Wind in Italy, Djezzy in Algeria, Telecel Zimbabwe and Mobilink in Pakistan. VimpelCom and GTH have agreed to sell their majority stake in Telecel Zimbabwe and to merge Mobilink with local rival Warid Pakistan.
