Sistema, the parent company of Russian mobile operator MTS, played down reports of talks for a possible merger with another telecoms operator.
Spokesman Vsevolod Sementsov said: “We’re searching for opportunities on the market but there are no concrete talks. We understand that the process of globalisation will force us to look for growth internationally but we’re currently not in negotiations.
“We haven’t selected any kind of adviser because there is no concrete plan,” he added.
MTS IR director said: “We do not comment on M&A speculation. Our strategic focus remains on Russia/CIS as evident by our track record over the past 18 months.
Sistema’s founder and major shareholder Vladimir Evtushenkov was quoted saying in media that MTS was in talks with several telecoms operator over a possible merger.
Last year, reports alleged that Telekom Austria was the subject of a possible takeover bid by MTS.
