Cameroon’s ministry of posts and telecommunications has revealed the list of the operators shortlisted for the award of the country’s third mobile licence.
The mobile operators are: Bharti Airtel, Monaco Telecom, Viettel, Maroc Telecom, Portugal Telecom, Detecon (Deutsche Telekom), and Technologie et Systeme d’Information (KT Corp).
The successful bidder, which will receive a 3G licence, will compete against MTN and Orange, respectively number one and number two in Cameroon.
Initially, nine mobile operators had submitted bids for the 3G frequencies.
The second bidding round will close on 9 November, but a date for the award of the licence has yet to be announced.
The mobile penetration rate among Cameroon’s population of 20 million is currently low but continues to rise, providing growth opportunities for mobile companies.
