US towerco SBA Communications plans to continue hunting for tower acquisition opportunities in Brazil following two recent deals with local mobile operator Oi.
CEO Jeffrey Stoops said in a conference call that increasing the towerco’s portfolio was still of interest, although acknowledged that “now having gotten to scale, we believe that our strategic needs have been satisfied”.
The company also wants to step up its built-to-suit and leasing capabilities, he added.
SBA will have the rights to around 5000 towers sites in Brazil from next month, presuming its R$1.53bn (US$644m) acquisition of around 2000 towers from Oi closes without a hitch.
Last November SBA completed its first significant deal with Oi when it acquired just over 2100 sites for R$687m (US$304m). SBA entered the country in 2012 when it bought 800 towers from Telefonica’s Brazilian subsidiary Vivo for R$362.8m (US$178m).
