Romanian cable and DTH operator RCS&RDS is close to acquiring local cableco UPC Romania for US$300m, according to reports translating local paper ZF.
Entrepreneur Zoltan Teszari, who owns 43% of RCS&RDS, is reportedly in talks with Goldman Sachs, Credit Suisse and Morgan Stanley to finance an acquisition of the group.
Reports suggest that UPC Romania’s owners, US cable giant Liberty Global, hired Rothschild last year to review strategic alternatives in the face of strong competition from RCS&RDS.
UPC Romania had initially been valued at US$700m, but has seen its subscriber base fall as a result of this competition, the reports add.
RCS&RDS and Liberty Global were unable to comment before the press deadline.
