The Department of Telecommunication (DoT) has rejected a demand from Indian operator Reliance Communications (RCom) to get additional 2G airwaves for its GSM-based mobile services, according to local reports.
Cellcos are usually awarded more spectrum once their subscriber base reaches certain pre-defined thresholds, the reports wrote.
But the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) was quoted saying it would not process requests for extra spectrum as it is currently looking into the feasibility of pricing such airwaves.
In a separate report, the Telecom Dispute Settlement Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) also recently rejected a request from Indian cellco Tata Teleservices to get additional spectrum.
Tata, a CDMA operator, had reportedly filed a petition in order to obtain as many airwaves as that held by GSM players. While GSM operators get a start-up spectrum of 4.4MHz, CDMA players get 2.5MHz.
But the TDSAT ruled that Tata failed to establish why it should be treated on an equal basis to GSM operators and why the original decision was unconstitutional.
