Indian telco Reliance Communications (RCOM) has been asked, by India’s Supreme Court, to deposit 50% of the bandwidth usage charge, as requested by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), according to the Business Standard.
The company has also been told to give a bank guarantee for the remaining amount within the next two weeks, the newspaper wrote. RCOM reportedly said that the request to only provide half the amount now was an interim relief.
Telcos, including Vodafone Essar, Bharti Airtel, Idea, and Uninor, are reportedly required to pay an increased percentage of their adjusted gross revenues to the DoT, depending on how much spectrum they hold.
But the increase in spectrum charges, which came into force in April last year, has been contested by many operators since then.
RCOM could not be reached for comment before the press deadline.
