Incumbent Pakistan Telecommunication Company (PTCL) will take part in the country’s 3G auction, CEO Walid Irshaid said.
Speaking at the UAE Trade and Investment Conference 2011 on 2 December, he noted that PTCL is the first telco to officially announce its participation in the process and added that the company has no option but to succeed.
Pakistan had originally planned to auction 3G licenses in 2007, but the process has been fraught with several delays as incumbent operators seek to recover costs from the country’s 2G scandal before investing in new infrastructure.
In October this year, the auction stalled again because regulatory officials had yet to decide whether the process would be open or limited to incumbent operators.
Local regulator Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has also not determined the value of the licences it plans to make available, reported local media citing an unnamed official.
