The German cable operator Primacom has made Andrew Barron its chairman effective today.
Barron already heads the board at Swedish cableco Com Hem and was previously chief operating officer at British operator Virgin Media.
He takes over from board member Wolf Waschkuhn who had been acting as interim chair at the Leipzig-based operator.
Barron joins Renaat Berckmoes, a former Telenet CFO, and Marcel Nijhoff, previously chief commercial officer at Ziggo, who have also become directors at Primacom in the last six months.
Commenting on the appointment of Barron, Primacom’s CEO Joachim Grendel, said: “His extensive experience of the European cable media sector will complement that of our newest board members Renaat and Marcel and be of great benefit to the business as we continue with our successful growth strategy.”
Barron said: “I am pleased to join the board at this exciting time in the company’s development and look forward to working with my new colleagues as they pursue further growth opportunities within the evolving cable media market in Germany.”
The country’s cable market is primed for consolidation and Primacom has already made one of the first moves, buying up smaller rival DTK Deutsche Telekabel a year ago for an undisclosed fee.
Primacom is part of a group of smaller cablecos in Germany alongside Tele Columbus and Pepcom which are seen possible targets. They are all smaller than market leaders Deutsche Telekom, Kabel Deutschland and UnityMedia, the latter two of which have both been involved in big consolidation deals in recent years.
