Influential politicians in the lower house of the Mexican Congress have criticised the influence of economic interests on telecoms legislation, according to local reports.
The Mexican newspaper El Universal reported on Tuesday that the president of the communications commission within the lower house had said that the lack of movement in reforms to telecoms legislation was due to economic, not political issues.
The president of the lower house’s committee on radio, television and cinematography, Carlos Sotelo, reportedly said that the Congress and the executive had been captured by the forces of the establishment, and that these economic forces had influence with political power.
He gave an example of the law allowing 100% ownership of a telecommunications network by a foreign company, which he said was developed by Telefonica and then adopted by various politicians.
The Mexican government announced its intentions last year to introduce new legislation into the domestic telecoms market, which is currently dominated by America Movil, the telco owned by the magnate Carlos Slim.
