The European Parliament adopted a resolution on 6 May proposing that every EU household should have access to broadband internet at a competitive price by 2013.
MEPs want 50% of EU households to be connected to very high-speed networks by 2015 and 100% by 2020 and that all primary and secondary schools have reliable internet connections by 2013
The parliament is also calling for a strategy to ensure that 75% of mobile subscribers are 3G users by 2015.
The resolution also calls for a clear legal framework laying down the rights and duties of citizens while protecting personal data.
In a release, the Commission said: “The European Parliament’s views on Europe’s digital future have been welcomed by European Commission Vice-President for the Digital Agenda Neelie Kroes. In particular, the Commissioner welcomed proposals from Parliament that all EU citizens should have access to broadband internet by 2013, be able to use their mobile phones as a mobile wallet and have access to all public services online by 2015.”
The Commission is currently preparing its Communication on a Digital Agenda for Europe, which will be adopted in the coming weeks. The Digital Agenda for Europe is one of the flagships of the Commission’s strategy for economic and financial recovery.
