Filipino telecoms regulator has denied a request by Smart Communications, a local mobile phone and Internet services provider, to drop a case brought by a group of cable television services providers, according to media reports.
A few months ago, the Philippines Cable Television Association (PCTA) asked the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to force Smart to give up its mobile TV service.
Smart discontinued its service in April and therefore asked the NTC to drop the case. But the watchdog argued that the issue of whether a telco should be allowed to offer digital TV services is likely to occur again at some point in the future and should therefore be settled once and for all.
Smart and the NTC were not available for comment by press time.
