Finnish vendor Nokia has promoted Henry Tirri, previously head of its research unit, to CTO.
Tirri replaces Richard Green, who has held the position since May 2010 but leaves the company to pursue undisclosed opportunities in the US.
“During his time at Nokia, Henry has provided Nokia technical leadership and challenged us to explore forward-looking technologies,” explained Nokia CEO Stephen Elop.
“In his new role, Henry will have the opportunity to make a greater impact and set the course for Nokia and our role in the mobile industry.”
Nokia has seen a raft of management changes over the year as the group shifts from being a vertically-integrated device and software company to one that has partnered with US software giant Microsoft, using its OS to compete with smartphone giants Apple and Google.
Speaking to delegates at the Open Mobile Summit in London on 9 June, Elop described how the mobile industry was “going through a pretty dynamic and destructive time”, pointing to a shift from a battle of devices to a war of ecosystems.
Outlining Nokia’s new strategy, he said its business is pinned on creating an open mobile environment that will draw consumers to its services.
This would include location-based apps and tools to provide unified communications, such as VoIP – helped by Microsoft’s US$8.5bn acquisition of Skype.
