Malaysian telecoms giant Axiata has announced more new appointments in its management shake-up at the helm of its operations, which it says are in line with its ambitions to become the dominant player in the regional market.
On Thursday it appointed Supun Weerasinghe as CEO of its Bangladesh unit Robi Axiata.
Weerasinghe will relinquish his current post of Axiata’s Group chief strategy officer at the end of December 2013 when he takes over the reins from Michael Kuehner. A company statement did not mention where Kuehner would head to.
The company has also appointed Kanishka Wickrama as CFO of its Cambodian telco Smart Axiata.
Axiata president and group CEO Dato’ Sri Jamaludin Ibrahim said: “Talent management is a key part of the Axiata strategy towards becoming a regional champion.
“Supun is an example of a great talent, developed internally over his 14 years with the group, first at Dialog in Sri Lanka and then at corporate centre, now ready to take on the role as CEO at one of our operating companies. This is also the case with Kanishka who has been with us in Sri Lanka, Cambodia and the corporate centre before his assignment as CFO.”
A week ago the company announced that Axiata group CFO James Maclaurin will leave his role at the end of the year to become CEO of a new unit known as e.co, which will own and manage the company’s passive network infrastructure.
Maclaurin will be joined at e.co by Nashad Emir and Thivanka Rangala as COO and CFO respectively. Emir is currently chief programme and customer experience officer at Celcom, while Thivanka is head of regional development and investor relations at Axiata, it explained last week.
