Polish fixed-line telco Netia has confirmed it has entered into a cooperation agreement with local mobile operator P4 (Play), enabling it to develop mobile and converged offerings.
Warsaw-listed Netia said in a statement today that after months of negotiations with Play and rival mobile operator Polkomtel (Plus), it has decided upon the former as the “most attractive partner”.
Netia’s outgoing CEO Adam Sawicki cited the company’s historical ties with Play and its attractive pricing and range of services as reasons for selecting it as a strategic partner.
Netia had a 23.4% stake in Play, the country’s number four mobile player, before selling it to its current owners, funds owned by Greek businessman Panos Germanos and Iceland’s Thor Bjorgolfsson, in 2008.
While Netia has cooperated with both Play and Polkomtel in the past, Sawicki said having a single mobile partner will bring operational improvements and cost savings.
A spokesperson for Netia declined to comment on speculation that the new partnership may lead to a potential merger.
Sawicki’s resignation from Netia, announced last week, is effective as of 31 July. No replacement has yet been named.
