MTS and Synterra are said to be interested in Russian cable and broadband operator Multiregion.
Multiregion, which trades under the Multineks brand name, was set up in 2004 and is now present in 37 cities in 21 Russian regions.
MTS has applied to receive approval from the anti-competition authority to buy the operator. It is seeking regulatory approval before deciding whether to make a bid to evaluate the conditions imposed by the regulator.
Multiregion was reported to be offered for sale in 2007 for US$300m but only attracted bids for US$150m-US$180m. It is now valued at US$150m to US$250m.
Operators are seeing a growth opportunity in the broadband internet market as it is fast-growing but still largely underdeveloped.
