India’s MTNL plans to submit a bid for the sale of Nigeria’s telecom incumbent, Nitel, say media reports.
The news comes as Nigeria’s Bureau of Public Enterprises postponed the bid submission deadline for the fifth time since mid-2009, to February 15.
Shortlisted bidders have previously included Telefonica as well as local operators including MTN Nigeria, Etisalat Nigeria and Globacom. Those three, however, have been told that they would not be able to bid for Nitel’s mobile arm to prevent unfair competition.
A consortium led by BNP Paribas and Eledas Capital is advising the government on the process, which has faced constant delays since launched in summer 2008.
