Just weeks after completing its acquisition of Zantel, Millicom has installed an insider – emerging markets veteran Benoit Janin – as head of its new Tanzanian business.
Swedish telecoms holding Millicom (STO:MIC) has named insider Benoit Janin as CEO of its recently acquired Tanzanian business, Zantel. He takes over from Pratap Ghose, who after three years in the role is now an adviser to Etisalat, according to his LinkedIn profile.
On 26 October, Millicom completed its acquisition of an 85% stake in Zantel from Etisalat. The Zanzibar government retains its 15% stake.
Janin moves from Tigo Chad, another Millicom subsidiary, where he had been CEO for nearly four years. In a statement, the company credited him with double digit growth introducing 4G services.
In his 16 years in telecoms, Janin has also been CCO of Vimpelcom’s Beeline Cambodia, commercial development director at Orange Madagascar and chief sales officer at Orange Botswana, according to his LinkedIn profile.
Janin said Zantel would focus on “continuing to enhance the Zantel brand experience”, adding that the company would improve and extend existing 2G and 3G networks, with a view to launching the island’s first 4G service in “early 2016” and improving mobile money services.
In August, Ooredoo alumna Cynthia Gordon became head of Millicom’s Africa business.
