Pan-European cableco Liberty Global is looking to continue its push into content by acquiring half of German video-on-demand provider Maxdome, according to a widely-referenced report from business paper Handelsblatt citing industry sources.
Maxdome is wholly-owned by local broadcaster ProSiebenSat.1 Group and is reported to be Germany’s biggest streaming service.
Under the proposed deal, Liberty would acquire a 50% stake in Maxdome and ProSieben would hold the remainder, the report said.
When contacted, both companies declined to comment on the report.
Liberty is the largest multinational cableco and in Europe where it operates in 12 markets.
Until recently, Liberty was a serial acquirer of cable assets across Europe; in 2011 it acquired German operator Kabel BW and merged it with its local cableco Unitymedia.
More recently, the group has switched its attention to content. This year it completed the joint acquisition of UK-based TV production and distribution house All3Media, partnering with US group Discovery Communications on the deal.
Meanwhile, it has bought a 6.4% stake in UK broadcaster ITV for US$824m and its Belgian subsidiary, Telenet, has struck a deal to buy 50% of Flemish broadcaster De Vijver Media.
